The premise

Most AI progress is narrated as one model growing larger. VIVARIUM imagines a different path: populations of compact architectures mutate under explicit survival pressures, express specialized computational circuits, and pass only verified adaptations into a visible lineage.

Architecture becomes phenotype

The central organism is not a decorative tree. Its recursive grammar represents a machine genotype, while every branch becomes a specialized circuit whose thickness, reach, and activity reveal inherited capability.

Evaluation becomes selection

Three descendants emerge for every generation. Energy, latency, or resilience pressure changes their morphology, evaluation pulses test every circuit, and weak variants dissolve instead of surviving by default.

Progress becomes lineage

The winning phenotype returns to the chamber, grafts its useful mutations into the species, and remains inspectable beside reconstructed ancestors rather than disappearing behind a single benchmark score.
